The Apostasy

LA APOSTASÍA

THE APOSTASY

When Jesus Christ lived upon the Earth, he established his Church. He chose twelve apostles and other leaders to guide the Church. He ordained them and gave them the Priesthood, the authority to act in his name. He taught his doctrine to the members of the Church, and he taught them to administer the ordinances of the gospel.

After the Savior’s death, the apostles and other leaders guided the Church through inspiration and revelation. But while some of the apostles were still alive, some men started to teach ideas related to their old and pagan beliefs instead of the true, clear and simple ones that Jesus Christ taught. Besides, there was great persecution from outside the Church and the apostles were killed one by one. Finally, only local officials of the Priesthood remained to direct the various branches of the Church. The perfect organization ceased to exist and due to the introduction of erroneous and false doctrines, the true Church was lost and in its place was a Church without divine authority and with false doctrines.

This period is called “The Great Apostasy.” Because of this apostasy, there was no direct revelation from God. Very soon pagan beliefs dominated the thoughts of those who called themselves “Christians.” The Church became the official religion of the Roman Empire. It was quite different from the one Jesus Christ organized. Many of the ordinances were changed. The emperor appointed his own leaders, and they were given honor and wealth. The bishops and archbishops fought among themselves to gain more power. They even changed the name of the Church. It was not the Church of Jesus Christ anymore, but instead, a church of men.
